ODESSA, TX (July 1, 2021) – Odessa College announced the addition of a Women's Golf program beginning in the fall of 2022. The program will become the seventh sport in which the Wranglers will compete at the National Junior College Athletic Association (NJCAA) D1 level.
OC Athletic Director Wayne Baker said, “Odessa is a golfing community, and there are many competitive women’s golf programs across the Permian Basin. This makes the Women’s Golf program an easy choice for Odessa College.”
Baker added, “The addition of a women’s golf program will enhance female athletic opportunities for student-athletes at OC, with many of those educational opportunities going to students from West Texas and the Permian Basin. We are excited to provide these additional opportunities to the young people attending Odessa College.”
Currently, only five NJCAA schools in Texas compete in women’s golf: Western Texas College, Tyler Junior College, Ranger College, McLennan Community College and Blinn College. All five of those programs finished in the top 15 at the NJCAA National Championship last season.
The NJCAA announced this week that women’s golf will be divided into Division I and Division III beginning in the 2021-22 season. Prior to this change, more than 80 schools competed in women’s golf as a non-divisional sport that started in 2000-01.
