TIMELY WARNING ODESSA, TX | April 15, 2024 – This morning the Odessa College Police Department (OCPD) received a report of a pursuit of a possible homicide suspect. As such the Early College High Schools on campus are sheltering in place – no one can enter or exit the locked buildings (Deaderick and OCTECHS LRC entrance). Subsequent reports indicate that the suspect is at large, travelling in a black soft-top Mustang and is armed. The current instructional block ends at 12:20 pm. I will provide an update regarding the dismissal of ECHS students in college classes at 12:10 pm. In the meantime do not dismiss ECHS students in college classrooms until this notification.

The City of Odessa Police Department (OPD) is leading this investigation. OCPD has no evidence to suggest that those involved are associated with the college.

This timely warning has been sent as a precaution. While a threat to campus does not appear to be imminent, it is incumbent on us to ensure the campus community is aware, updated, and reminded to practice situational awareness at all times. Because the possible threat included references to gun-related violence, OCPD and Odessa College want to remind all students and employees of the key behavior in any possible or real Active Shooter situation: Run, Hide, Fight. Campus Security Update: Suspect Apprehended Near Campus | February 13, 2023 – This afternoon at approximately 2:25 pm, the Odessa College Police Department (OCPD) received a report that a person suspected of a murder at a convenience store on Highway 80 in Odessa earlier today was apprehended during a traffic stop at the corner of Kermit Highway and Golder Avenue.

This timely warning has been sent as an informational update only. While the crime and the subsequent arrest did not present a threat to campus, it is incumbent on us to ensure the campus community is aware, updated, and reminded to practice situational awareness at all times. TIMELY WARNING: COVID-19 | August 31, 2022 – A member of the Odessa College community has tested positive for COVID-19. The case involves a dual credit student who was active in the ET Building. The individual is in isolation, and is receiving care following protocols from the County Health Department. The college was notified of the positive test this morning.

You have received this communication because you may have been exposed to a lab-confirmed, positive COVID-19 person on campus or at an approved instructional site. Due to student (FERPA) and medical (HIPAA) confidentiality and privacy laws, the person’s name will not be shared. Students and employees who, by process of elimination or otherwise, identify the person who tested positive, and threaten or discriminate against that person, will be subject to the college’s discipline and adjudication process.

Students and employees who have been exposed are not required to quarantine; however, should you experience the following COVID-19 symptoms, stay home: Cough; Shortness of breath or difficulty breathing; chills; repeated shaking with chills; muscle pain; headache; sore throat; loss of taste or smell; diarrhea; or feeling feverish or a measured temperature greater than or equal to 99.2 degrees Fahrenheit.

Please continue taking recommended precautions to protect yourself and others while on campus: wear a mask; avoid close contact with others; cover your nose and mouth when you cough or sneeze; avoid touching eyes, nose and mouth; clean and disinfect surfaces and objects that may be contaminated; wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds. Odessa College continues to follow the CDC guidelines to mitigate the spread and unpredictability of the COVID-19 virus. The college’s sanitization protocols significantly reduce exposure to the virus in learning and student support spaces. Campus and community resources are available to students impacted by COVID-19 including a food pantry, a licensed professional counselor and mental health resources, as well as emergency aid.

The individual is in isolation, and is receiving care following protocols from the County Health Department. The college was notified of the positive test this morning.

Timely Warning - Odessa, TX | 2/17/2022 – 4:45 pm CST: There have been erroneous reports circulating in the community regarding an active shooter situation at Odessa College. These rumors were most likely sparked by a situation that occurred at approximately 3:45 pm this afternoon in the 1300 Block of E. 8th Street, when the Odessa Police Department responded to reports of a person with a gun. News reports indicate that the situation is no longer active. All of this activity took place several miles from Odessa College, and no OC students, faculty or staff were in danger, or placed in any threatening situation by this activity.

The social media message was not specific, and the ECISD Police Department is responding and investigating accordingly.

At this time there is no indication of danger to our Early College High School nor Odessa College.

TIMELY WARNING: report of incident on campus | August 24, 2021 – This morning at approximately 7:50 am, a vehicle traveling on Shakespeare Road pulled into the parking lot adjacent to the ET Building Grab and Go entrance. An apparent altercation took place, and the passenger exited the vehicle. He then slashed a tire on the vehicle in which they were travelling. The occupants are related and the situation appears to be a domestic dispute. The suspect left the scene, and it is assumed he travelled north, on foot, leaving campus. The suspect is an Hispanic male, 22 years old, wearing a black baseball cap, blue welding shirt and dark pants. The suspect is not an employee nor student of the college. At this time, we do not believe there is an imminent threat on campus; however, Odessa College Police Department reminds all students, faculty, staff and campus visitors to:

Report suspicious activity or suspicious people immediately.
Stay alert and tuned in to your surroundings. Be aware and prepared.
Trust your instincts, and if you do not feel comfortable in place or situation, leave.
Use caution when walking alone at all times, and travel in groups whenever possible.

OCPD has been made aware that suspects are now in custody and OPD is no longer securing the search area. The suspects have not been identified at this time. More details are expected to be released in the near future.

Odessa, TX – Today at approximately 1 pm, OPD made Odessa College Police Department aware of an investigation and ongoing search for suspects in drive by shooting incidents this morning. The search for suspects is active and just northwest of campus. There is an active police presence on this side of town, and our officers are monitoring campus entrances and exits.

While a threat to campus does not appear to be imminent, nor ongoing, it is incumbent on us to ensure the campus community is aware, updated, and reminded to practice situational awareness at all times. This morning’s timely warning was sent as a precaution. While a threat to campus did not appear to be imminent, nor ongoing, it is incumbent on us to ensure the campus community is aware, updated, and reminded to practice situational awareness at all times.

Timely Warning: Ector County Sheriff's Office searching for serial shooter; Shooter fires at drivers of broken down vehicles

Odessa TX, -- Today, Friday, September 27, 2019, at approximately 10 am CST, Odessa College Police Department was made aware of an Ector County Sheriff's Office investigation regarding a possible serial shooter. Per the CBS 7 (KOSA) news release:

Ector County Sheriff Mike Griffis tells CBS7 two people have been shot in four separate instances since Tuesday, and he believes the same person is doing the shooting.

He says two people were shot and at least one died.

THE SHERIFF SAYS IN ALL OF THE CASES, THE SHOOTER PULLED UP TO HELP A BROKEN DOWN VEHICLE AND SHOT THE DRIVER.

The latest was last night around 10:30 p.m. on Business 20 between Highway 1936 and the I-20 overpass.

The shooter used a handgun in all four shootings. The identity of the shooter varies in all of the instances.

Investigators say the suspect is driving a white pickup truck, possibly a 4-door. They can't confirm the make or model yet.

The times and locations include:

#1) Tuesday morning at 12:45 a.m. at 8th and Grant

#2) Then at 7:36 a.m. at I-20 and Highway 866

#3) That afternoon at Meteor Crater Road and I-20 near the Pilot truck stop

#4) Then last night on Business 20

Timely Warning: report of gunfire near campus

ODESSA, TX – Today, Saturday, August 31, 2019, at approximately 7:10 CST, an automobile rammed an ECISD Police Department car near campus. Reports of gunfire were received immediately following the incident. The suspect has been detained and there is no ongoing threat to the campus or campus community.

Please be advised: reports indicate that the campus is no longer under threat from the active shooter situation in Odessa. As such, the residence hall lock down has been lifted. Campus residents will be updated regarding evening meal service via the Remind App.

The Odessa College Sports Center will close for the evening and reopen tomorrow at the regular time.

ODESSA, TX – Today, Saturday, August 31, 2019, at approximately 4:05 pm CST, Odessa College Police Department (OCPD) were made aware of an active shooter situation within the city limits - approximately one mile from campus. As a precaution, the residence halls have been put on lockdown and all others on campus, or in campus buildings, are urged to use the college’s active shooter protocol: run, hide, fight.
